FSBI Petrov Research Institute of Oncology of the Ministry of Healthcare of the Russian Federation is one of the largest federal scientific and medical centers in Russia that provides specialized medical care, including high-tech medical care, in compliance with international standards. Scientific and research activity of the Institute aims at development of cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment methods.

The Institute of Oncology was established in Leningrad, March 15, 1927; it is currently considered to be one of the oldest medical institutions of the North-Western Federal District of Russia. Today the Research Institute of Oncology proudly bears the name of its founder, initiator of the Russian oncology Nikolai Nikolaevich Petrov. Over the years, there was established a unique Russian scientific school, which gave the world such outstanding scientists as S.A. Kholdin, L.M. Shabad, A.I. Rakov, A.I. Serebrov, N.P. Napalkov, M.L. Gershanovich, V.N. Anisimov, V.F. Semiglazov and others.

There are 11 scientific units, 12 clinical departments, 3 outpatient diagnostic departments in the Institute. The Institute has more than 1,000 employees, including leading experts of the Russian oncology: corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, professors, doctors and candidates of medical sciences, doctors with the highest professional category.


All-Russian Public Organization "Russian Association of Coloproctology" was established in 1992; it was initiated by coloproctologists of the Russian Federation. The aims and objectives of the organization are professional training, advanced training of coloproctologists and improvement of their professional skills, reduction of adverse effects and improvement of therapeutic and diagnostic care to patients as well as development and implementation of new organizational, diagnostic and treatment technologies, publication of scientific and practical materials, organization and holding of national congresses, Russian national interregional, regional symposia and seminars of coloproctologists, participation in the organization and work of international conferences.

"Russian Association of Coloproctology" is unique in its field and one of the oldest public health associations. Currently, the Association includes more than 800 coloproctologists from all regions of Russia and abroad.

Федеральное государственное бюджетное учреждение "Государственный научный центр колопроктологии имени А.Н.Рыжих" Минздрава России начинает свою историю с 1965 года, когда по решению Министерства Здравоохранения РСФСР была образована научно-исследовательская лаборатория по проктологии с клиникой.

Saint Petersburg State Budgetary Institute of Healthcare “MUNICIPAL CLINICAL ONCOLOGY DISPENSARY”

The Municipal Clinical Oncology Dispensary is the only specialized institution in St. Petersburg that has all of the most-up-to-date equipment. Its doctors use advanced techniques to assist patients with benign and malignant tumors. The institution provides 813 inpatient beds in 12 departments, together with 186-day beds. There is an outpatient department with 146,000 visits per year, it includes 15 clinical specializations: general oncology, mammology, oncodermatology, coloproctology, tumors of the esophagus, mediastinum, and lung, gynecological oncology, head and neck tumors, malignant neoplasms of the upper respiratory tract, oncological urology, chemotherapy, radiology, prevention and early diagnosis of cervical cancer and breast cancer, endocrinology, rehabilitation and palliative care to cancer patients. Ostomy patient rehabilitation division is the first in the Russian Federation; it not only has rehabilitation function but organizational and methodical functions as well.


North-Western State Medical University named after I.I. Mechnikov was formed on October 12, 2011 as a result of the merger of the two oldest educational medical institutions in Russia - St. Petersburg Medical Academy of Postgraduate Studies and St. Petersburg State Medical Academy n.a. I.I. Mechnikov. The founder of Mechnikov University is the Ministry of Healthcare of the Russian Federation. Diagnostic and clinical work at Mechnikov University is conducted in 6 own clinics with a capacity of 800 beds and includes 25 clinical specializations. Annually, clinical subdivisions of the University provide highly qualified medical assistance to approximately 40,000 patients at hospital and about 300,000 are treated on an outpatient basis. The research work at Mechnikov University is conducted in accordance with state-of-the-art developments in biomedical sciences. Considerable attention is given to studies in the field of health protection and sanitary and epidemiological welfare of the population. The long-term strategy is focused on effective transfer of fundamental and applied research activities as well as development of enabling scientific and educational environment, providing continuing training of highly qualified personnel.


Cancer Prevention Fund is a nonprofit organization that promotes the development and implementation of cancer prevention and screening and organizes and funds research in this field.

The main goals of Cancer Prevention Fund are:

  1. Reduction of cancer mortality both in the Russian Federation and worldwide.
  2. Increase in cancer survival; reduction of disability in the population.

Cancer Prevention Fund's mission:

  1. To facilitate in every possible way the implementation of early cancer detection in Russia: population-based screening system, new methods of cancer detection.
  2. To promote in every possible way primary cancer prevention in Russia and worldwide.
